Thijs Smeets

Thijs Smeets is an award-winning Dutch designer and engineer celebrated for his elegant, user-centric designs that seamlessly blend form and function. After studying Industrial Product Design at The Hague University of Applied Sciences, Smeets gained experience at various design studios in the Netherlands and New York before founding Studio Smeets in Amsterdam in 2007. His multidisciplinary approach encompasses a wide range of products, from furniture and consumer electronics to in-flight tableware and saunas.   

Smeets’ portfolio includes notable designs such as the LiliLite reading lamp, which combines a bookshelf, reading light, and bookmark into a single, intuitive product. His biodegradable tableware for Hampi Products earned the Toon van Tuijl Design Award at the Dutch Design Awards in 2010. The Cosíma lounge series for OFS, named after his daughter, features soft, organic forms designed for moments of relaxation during busy workdays.    

His work has been exhibited globally, from Seoul to Hamburg, and is included in the collection of the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art in Amsterdam. Smeets has collaborated with major brands like Rabobank, Unilever, Sara Lee, and Nokia, as well as design-focused companies, resulting in millions of his products being sold worldwide.
