Gemma Bernal

Gemma Bernal is a pioneering Spanish industrial designer whose career spans over five decades, marked by a commitment to simplicity, functionality, and human-centered design. A graduate of EINA, University School of Design and Art of Barcelona, she began her professional journey in 1968, co-founding her first design team with Beth Galí and Ramón Isern. Their collaboration produced notable works, including a telephone shower that earned the prestigious Delta de Oro award.

From 1973 to 1999, Bernal partnered exclusively with Isern, creating a diverse range of products characterized by sober style and functionality. Post-1999, she collaborated with designers David Ramos and Jordi Bassols before establishing her own studio in 2004.

Bernal’s extensive portfolio encompasses electronics, furniture, lighting, and tableware. Her designs, such as the “Ona” tableware (1992) and the “Cristalina” table (1983), reflect her philosophy of integrating design with order, technology, craftsmanship, and tradition.

An esteemed educator, Bernal has taught at institutions like Elisava, EINA, ESDI, and CEU San Pablo, and has contributed to design programs in countries including Korea, Argentina, and Peru. Her work has been showcased in numerous international exhibitions and fairs.

Bernal’s contributions to design have been recognized with multiple awards, including the ADI-FAD, Feria de Valencia, CEVIDER, AFAMUR, Red Dot Design Award, and Silver A’ Design Award.

In 2023, her work was featured in the “Som aquí. Les dones en el disseny 1900-Avui” exhibition at the Museu del Disseny de Barcelona, highlighting her influence in the field.

Bernal continues to lead her studio in Barcelona, focusing on projects that emphasize clarity, subtlety, and ecological responsibility.
