Burkhard Vogtherr

Burkhard Vogtherr was a renowned German industrial designer celebrated for his minimalist, ergonomic furniture that seamlessly blended form and function. Born in Germany, Vogtherr began his career with an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker before studying industrial design at the Werkkunstschulen in Kassel and Wuppertal, graduating in 1967. He initially worked at Vitra before establishing his own studio in 1972. His designs, such as the Motion chair for Davis and the Diagon series for Girsberger, are noted for their lightness, grace, and innovative use of materials to achieve comfort without excessive padding. Vogtherr’s work earned him numerous accolades, including the German Gute Form (Good Design) Prize in 1969. He passed away suddenly in August 2019, leaving behind a legacy of thoughtful, enduring design.
